Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln is widely considered to be one of the greatest American presidents for his role as leader during the American Civil War and his work to end slavery. He successfully navigated the country through its greatest internal crisis, preserving the Union, ending slavery and modernizing the economy. His Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declared slaves in Confederate-held territory to be free and he pushed the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address are considered two of the greatest speeches in American history. He was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer.
