The Shunga Empire

The Shunga Empire was an ancient Indian dynasty that ruled in the northern and eastern parts of the subcontinent from around 185 to 73 BCE. The empire was founded by Pushyamitra Shunga, a commander in the army of the last Mauryan emperor, Ashoka. The Shungas were known for their patronage of the arts and sciences, and their reign saw the flourishing of Buddhism, as well as the development of new architectural and artistic styles. The empire was eventually overrun by the Kanva dynasty, which succeeded in restoring the Mauryan Empire.
