The Pallava Empire was a dynasty that ruled in southern India from the 4th to the 9th century AD. The empire was centered in the present-day state of Tamil Nadu and its capital was located at Kanchipuram. The Pallavas were known for their patronage of the arts, particularly the development of South Indian architecture and the creation of finely carved sculptures. They also played an important role in the spread of Buddhism and the development of the South Indian script, which is still used today. The empire eventually declined due to invasions by the Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties.
