Sambhaji Maharaj was the eldest son of the Maratha warrior king Shivaji and his queen, Saibai. He was born in 1657 and succeeded his father as the ruler of the Maratha Empire in 1680. He was known for his military campaigns and expansion of the Maratha Empire, as well as his cultural and religious patronage. He was captured and executed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1689.
