Pushyamitra Shunga was the founder and first ruler of the Shunga dynasty in ancient India, which ruled from around 185 BCE to 75 BCE. He is said to have been a commander in the army of the Mauryan Empire, and he overthrew the last Mauryan ruler to establish the Shunga dynasty. The Shunga dynasty was known for its patronage of the arts, and many important works of art and literature from the period have been attributed to the Shunga rulers. However, the dynasty is also known for its military expansion and for conflicts with neighboring kingdoms.
